मैं अपने घर में थी जब मैंने ‘अपराध और दंड’ पढ़ी थी और घर छोड़ते ही मैंने ‘चित्रलेखा’ पढ़ना शुरू किया था। बहुत कोशिश के बाद भी मैं ‘अपराध और दंड’ को छोड़ नहीं पाई। मैंने उसे अपने बैग में रख लिया। बीच-बीच में ‘चित्रलेखा’ पढ़ते हुए मैं ‘अपराध और दंड’ के कुछ हिस्सों को टटोलने लगती। और तब कुछ अलग पढ़ने का मन करता, और लगता कि काश अगर चित्रलेखा एक ख़त रस्कोलनिकोव को लिख दे तो मैं इस वक़्त उस ख़त को पढ़ना चाहूँगी। मैं उस पुल पर देर तक टहलना चाहती थी जिससे ये दो अलग दुनिया जुड़ सकती थीं। (उपन्यास की भूमिका से)
