‘Lekin’ is the exemplary poetic work of Jaun Elia originally written in Urdu, now translated in Hindi on peoples’ demand. Jaun Elia was decorated with the Award ‘Akadmi Adabiyat’ (2004) by the Govt. of Pakistan. Jaun Elia’s notable works include ‘Lekin’, ‘Gumaan’, ‘Shayad’, ‘Yaani’ and ‘Goya’. It was long felt that his works be translated in Hindi in view of the needs of Hindi readers. After ‘Gumaan’ having been translated in Hindi, Elia’s notable work ‘Lekin’ is also now translated and published in Hindi. A couple of glimpses of verses from ‘Lekin’ …”Firaq kya hai agar yad-e-yaar dil me rahe; Khizaan se kuchh nahi hota bahar dil me rahe…Guzar rozo shab-e-wasl ik nigaah ke saath; Wo hai jo ek shab-e-intezaar dil me rahe.” —“Ai nafas Aashuftgaan! shahar bagoolon ka hai; Rahiyo baham khud me yan, shahar bagoolon ka hai; Dhool hai saari zameen, dhundh hai sab aasman; Shakl ki soorat hai kahan, shahar bagoolon ka hai.”— Jaun Elia (1931-2002) was the Indian born Pakistani Urdu poet and scholar. Born in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, Jaun was the brother of Rais Amrohvi. His works in literature are worth reading having prominent modern approach popular for his unconventional ways and not believed to have been identified himself with a sect.
